Keeping hockey protective gear clean is important for hygiene, durability and preventing bad odour. Most gear can be washed, but not all. Base layers, insoles and jock or Jill can be washed in a washing machine. Shin guards, elbow pads and shoulder pads can also be machine-washed as long as they do not contain glue. Gloves can be washed in certain models if done in cold water on a gentle cycle. It is important to use mild detergent, no fabric softener and always air-dry, never tumble-dry. These items can also be cleaned by soaking them with detergent, for example in the bathtub.
Helmets, skates and goalie equipment such as leg pads, catcher and blocker should be washed carefully by hand with water and a little dish soap.
The most gentle way to keep the gear fresh is to hang it up in a well-ventilated space after each use so it has time to dry.
