  How should skate guards be cared for to prevent rust?

  Always dry the steel runners thoroughly with a towel immediately after leaving the ice before putting on soft skate guards. Soft skate guards absorb moisture during transport and help reduce the risk of rust, but at home the skates and guards should be left to dry separately outside the bag. Do not leave damp guards on the steel during extended storage, and regularly wipe the inside of hard guards so dirt does not wear down the runners.

  No, soft skate guards made from fabric or terry cloth are only intended for storage and moisture absorption inside your bag. If you walk in soft guards, the blade will quickly cut through the fabric, damaging both the guard and the skate edge. To walk safely on hard floors and concrete away from the ice, you need hard guards made from impact-resistant plastic or rubber.

  Hard guards have a durable sole that protects the runners from hard floors and allows you to walk between the locker room and the ice without wearing down the blade edges against the surface. Soft fabric guards are used inside the bag to absorb moisture and protect the rest of your equipment from sharp steel. The two types therefore serve different purposes: hard guards are for walking, while soft guards are for storage.
